Summer School Level 2 2009

Dates: Monday 20th July - 30th July 2009

Earlier this year young hopefuls auditioned throughout the province to become Bruiser students. They needed talent, enthusiasm and motivation.

The successful candidates completed a rigorous rehearsal period, learning a variety of physical theatre and vocal techniques under the excellent tuition of Lisa May and Ross Anderson. These budding thespians got to grips with the visually exciting, rhythmic and choreographic elements for which Bruiser is renowned. The focus of this showcase performance was ensemble playing, choral technique and physical precision.

The Summer School provided professional development in the theatre for young people, offering a taste of what it would be like to be a professional actor. Being a Bruiser actor is not easy, as our exhausted students can testify, but the cast of young 'Bruiserites' rose to the challenge superbly.

This project would not have been possible without the assistance from the Old Museum Arts Centre and the Legacy Trust UK through the National Lottery. We sincerely thank them for their support.

Our Bruiser Carnival group played a major role in the fantastic 'Fly Butterfly' event on 17th October as part of the celebrations for the reopening of Belfast City Hall. We staged two workshops in preparation for the group's contribution to the performance on the open-air stage outside City Hall on the day.

Our group of ten performers operated a huge caterpillar in the parade and on stage in front of hundreds of people. The group is looking forward to further Connections projects in 2010.
