Blue Remembered Hills

Blue Remembered Hills production image.

This Bruiser production shows the events of one summer afternoon in 1943. A group of seven year olds adopt the hills and woodland of rural England as their playground; a haven for exploration, speculation and wonder.

The end of the war is two years away, but when you’re seven, two years may as well be a lifetime. Childhood loyalty and friendships are explored with all the laughter and cruelty that children are capable of, but a single tragic event changes their world forever.

The children were played by an adult cast, so innocence was shot through with experience. The result was at times funny, chilling, honest and moving in Dennis Potter’s acclaimed story of lost innocence.

Critics Review

"Potter’s comic scenes still pack a weighty punch.
And, happily, that is something that may also be
said of Bruiser’s production of this play as a
   whole."
   Peter Millar in The Newsletter

"Potter’s script, married to Bruiser Theatre Company’s
unique take on physical theatre, has produced something
beguiling, chilling and 100% extraordinary. Bruiser have
reminded us that both innocence and cruelty lie beneath
   the most angelic of faces."
   Brendan Deeds, Culture Northern Ireland

"Lisa May has sensibly and sensitively taken Potter’s
edgy, naturalistic text completely at face value and
her cast...make an excellent job both of the child
roles and the rich, thickly accented vernacular...a
deceptively simple yet devastatingly powerful play
...a very grown-up and effectively realised final
   tragedy."
Jane Coyle in the Irish Times
